ソニー・スティットは、ビバップ期およびハードバップ期に活躍したジャズのサクソフォーン奏者で、チャーリー・パーカーら刺激を受け、後にジョン・コルトレーンを感化することとなりました。
多くの録音を行い生前には100以上の録音を残しています。
初期は、スタン・ゲッツやディジー・ガレスピーとの共演し、1945年にはガレスピー楽団でチャーリー・パーカーの後任になりました。
